William Ransom
Full name: William Clarence Henry George Ransom
Also known as: Willie, Ninth Earl of Ellesmere, Viscount Ashness, Baron Derwent
Born: January 1758
Legal Parents: Geneva Dunsany and Lord Ellesmere
Biological Parents: Geneva Dunsany and Jamie Fraser
Foster Parents: Isobel Dunsany and John Grey

William is Jamie's bastard son. He was orphaned on the day he was born and raised first by his maternal grandparents and then by foster parents, his aunt Isobel and Lord John Grey. He is the sole heir to both the Helwater and Ellesmere estates.
Significant Moments:
1757:
William is conceived three days before his mother Geneva marries, in a one night tryst between Geneva and Jamie that she has blackmailed Jamie into (V, chapter 14)
1758:
William is born in January. His mother Geneva dies a few hours later from complications associated with his birth. His maternal grandparents, the Dunsany's, arrive at Lord Ellesmere's house to take William back to Helwater. Lord Ellesmere is drunk. He knows the baby is not his but is determined to keep him as his heir. An argument erupts between Lord Ellesmere and Lord Dunsany. Lord Ellesmere grabs William and threatens to drop him out the window if the Dunsany's do not leave. Jamie grabs a pistol and fires at Lord Ellesmere, killing him. William becomes an orphan and also, as heir to Ellesmere, the possessor of one of the largest fortunes in the county (V, chapter 15)
1761:
At the age of three William can ride a horse by himself, although watched closely by his groom Mac (Jamie). He is a strong, courageous, bonny boy with a blinding smile and loads of charm, but he is also incredibly spoilt with consequent spoilt brat behaviour (V, chapter 16)
1764:
In September Jamie tells William that he is leaving Helwater. William gets angry and upset and screams and yells to frighten the horses. Jamie deals with the horses and then smacks William's bottom, causing William to scream that he hates him. Jamie snaps, 'Well, I'm no verra fond of you either, ye little bastard!' and William gets very upset at being called a bastard. Jamie is shocked and realises that people have started to talk. Jamie hugs William tight and then takes him to his room to give him a carved wooden horse that he's made as a farewell gift.
William sees that Jamie has two candles and a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary on his table and on learning that Jamie is a 'stinking papist' he says he wants to be one too. Jamie baptises him William James and when William tells him that's not his name, Jamie says it's his special Papist name. On impulse Jamie then gives William his wooden rosary to remember him by, telling William he must keep it hidden and not tell anyone that he is now a Papist. William promises and then becomes upset when he realises he has nothing to give Jamie for Jamie to remember him by. With a lump in his throat Jamie tells William that he will remember him (V, chapter 16)
