Claire Fraser
Significant Moments in Outlander:
1945/1946:
Claire is on a second honeymoon in Scotland with her husband Frank as they attempt to reconnect after being separated for most of World War II. Claire falls through the stones at Craigh na Dun and finds herself in the 18th century (Outlander/Cross Stitch, chapter 2)
1743:
Claire finds herself in 1743 after falling through the stones. She is taken to Castle Leoch and watched closely. Six weeks later she is taken to see Jack Randall who punches her in the stomach to try to force her to tell him who she really is. When Randall threatens to arrest her she is compelled to marry Jamie so that she is no longer an English subject and can escape Randall (Outlander, chapter 13) Claire gets very drunk before her wedding and falls asleep. While she is sleeping, Geillis's time traveller friend Kenneth creeps into Claire's room and wakes her up enough to ask her who the president of the USA is. When Claire murmurs 'Jesus H. Roosevelt', Kenneth deduces she is from the time of WWII (Exile, chapter 5)
Claire sees the waterhorse in Loch Ness while travelling back to Castle Leoch after her marriage (Outlander, chapter 19).
While attempting to escape to Craigh na Dun while Jamie goes to see Horrocks, Claire ends up in the hands of Jack Randall at Fort William where he tries to rape her but she is rescued by Jamie (Outlander, chapter 21)
Claire attempts to help Father Bain when he is bitten by a dog and when he refuses she warns him that his wound will fester if she doesn't clean it. Claire finds a sick baby left outside on a fairy hill and picks it up before Geillie makes her put it back (Outlander, chapter 24)
While Jamie is away hunting with the Duke of Sandringham, Laoghaire lies to Claire and tells her that Geillis Duncan is ill and has asked for her. (Outlander, chapter 24) Claire is in Geillis's house when a mob arrives to arrest Geillis for witchcraft and Claire is taken too. Jamie arrives in the nick of time and proves Claire isn't a witch by flinging her jet necklace over her head. Just at that moment when things hang in the balance Geillis steps forward and tells the mob that Claire is not a witch but she is which gives Claire and Jamie time to escape (Outlander, chapter 25)
Claire is forced to tell the truth to Jamie about who she really is. Jamie takes her to Craigh na Dun so that she can go back home to Frank but after agonising over the decision for half a day Claire lets instinct guide her and chooses to stay with Jamie (Outlander, chapter 25)
Jamie takes Claire to Lallybroch (Outlander, chapter 26) Claire and Jamie plan to leave Lallybroch when they hear there are English soldiers in the district but Jenny goes into labour on the day they were planning to leave and they end up staying (Outlander, chapter 32) A few days after Maggie's birth Ian and Jamie are met by the Watch about midday as they make their way to the mill and Jamie is taken. Claire and Jenny set off to rescue Jamie, Jenny leaving her newborn baby with Mrs Crooks. Jenny & Claire discover that Jamie had managed to escape from the Watch but don't find him nearby. Jenny has to return to Lallybroch to nurse Maggie and Murtagh turns up to help. Jenny asks Claire for advice before she goes and Claire tells her to plant potatoes, hoard gold and build a priest's hole (Outlander, chapter 33)
Not knowing where to begin to look for Jamie, Murtagh decides they need to make sure that Jamie can find them. He and Claire travel from place to place with Claire doing healing and fortune telling and Murtagh singing, and their reputation spreads. After some days a gypsy arrives with a message and takes Claire to a cave. She is expecting to find Jamie, but instead finds Dougal who tells her that Jamie was captured two weeks ago, taken to Wentworth Prison, tried and condemned to hang. Dougal tells Claire that it is impossible to rescue Jamie from Wentworth and he tries to inveigle Claire into going back with him to his home. He wants to marry Claire so that ownership of Lallybroch will come into his hands. Just as Dougal is about to force himself on Claire, Murtagh shows up with a pair of loaded pistols and puts a stop to it. (Outlander, chapter 34)
Claire, Murtagh and five of Dougal's men, including Rupert, set out to rescue Jamie from Wentworth. Just before Claire leaves, Dougal passes on a message to her from Geillis: "I think it is possible, but I do not know", and "1967" (Outlander, chapter 34)
Claire arrives at Wentworth Prison on December 21st to find that Jamie is due to be hanged on the 23rd. The following day Claire and Murtagh weasel their way into the prison and after knocking out a guard and stealing his keys Claire goes looking for Jamie while Murtagh sneaks back out of the prison. Claire learns from other prisoners that Jamie has been taken away by Randall. She is about to head down to the dungeons to look for him when a soldier appears and Claire is forced to kill him to avoid capture. Claire finds Jamie alone in a dungeon downstairs in a very bad way, chained by an ankle to a bolt in a wall and with his right hand pulverised into a broken pulp. She attempts to force the lock on the manacles but without success and Jack Randall reappears. Jamie does his best to attack both Randall and his servant Marley, but is too injured and weak to win. When Randall holds a knife to Claire's throat Jamie offers himself to Randall on the condition that he will let Claire go. Randall accepts Jamie's offer but nails Jamie's broken right hand to the desk before he escorts Claire out of the room. In anger and despair Claire curses Jack Randall and names the day he will die. Randall pushes her out a side door of the prison into a ditch full of frozen bodies (Outlander, chapter 35)
As Claire follows the ditch away from Wentworth she is stalked by a lone wolf and manages to kill it but not long after finds herself followed by the rest of the wolf's pack. In desperation Claire starts throwing rocks at the wolves and screaming at them. The noise she is making attracts the attention of a man who rescues her (Outlander, chapter 35) The man takes Claire to a cottage where she meets MacRannoch, a local landowner. Claire begs him to help her rescue Jamie but he is reluctant for fear of repercussions on his family. When Murtagh arrives and realises that Rupert has stolen 25 of MacRannoch's 40 cows, MacRannoch is persuaded to help them in return for getting his stolen cows back. Later that night Claire waits in the woods while the plan is put into action. MacRannoch succeeds in rescuing Jamie when he retrieves his cattle from the dungeons where Rupert and his men have driven them. Jamie is unconscious and in a bad way and he is taken to MacRannoch's property - Eldridge Manor. Jamie regains consciousness after a while and Claire tends to his wounds on a makeshift campbed in front of a fire and in particular the grisly job of resetting his smashed hand (Outlander, chapter 36)
Fearing discovery, Jamie, Claire and Murtagh leave Eldridge Manor at midday the following day although Jamie is still badly injured. En route they meet four English soldiers searching for the escaped prisoners. While Murtagh tries to bluff his way past them, Claire notices Jamie is dripping blood onto the snow. Claire hides the blood but one of the soldiers demands that Jamie takes off his hat to reveal his face and Jamie is forced to shoot him. Jamie and Murtagh deal with two of the remaining soldiers and Jamie throws his pistol to Claire and tells her to go after the fourth soldier who has fled. Claire shoots and wounds both the horse and soldier but doesn't kill either. Knowing she can't let the soldier live as he knows where they are heading she is forced to kill him with her dirk. He is very young, about 16. After dealing with the soldiers, Claire, Jamie & Murtagh arrive at the coast and board a ship to France and deliver Jamie to the Abbey of St. Anne de Beaupre (Outlander, chapter 37)
At the Abbey Claire meets Father Anselm who introduces her to the ritual of Perpetual Adoration and tells her what conditions are necessary for the commission of sin. While Jamie's physical wounds slowly heal his psychological wounds continue to fester (Outlander, chapter 38)
1744:
In despair Jamie asks Claire to go back to Frank as he is so sickened with himself that he cannot bear to touch her. (Outlander, chapter 39) Claire refuses to give up on Jamie and seeks divine guidance while praying in the chapel at the Abbey. The next morning she finds that Jamie's smashed right hand has become infected and Claire has to battle his high fever and his pleas for her to let him die. Jamie's feverish state and proximity to death provides Claire with the opportunity to try one last desperate attempt at healing his psychological wounds. Using a combination of opium, psychology and theatre, Claire forces Jamie to re-enact some of his abuse, but this time he is allowed to fight back. This was a great risk on Claire's part as Jamie could easily have killed her or died himself, but Claire succeeds in bringing Jamie back from the brink of physical and psychological destruction (Outlander, chapter 39)
When Claire recovers from her exorcism of Jamie, she asks Father Anselm to hear her confession. She tells him that about Frank, Jamie and the young dragoon she killed when they fled Wentworth, and that she is a time traveller. Claire seeks advice from Father Anselm as to whether she is guilty of murder and adultery. Father Anselm advises Claire that she has not committed adultery because both marriages were valid and her marriage to Jamie antedates her marriage to Frank, nor has she committed murder as the Bible recognises the need for defence of oneself and one's family. Claire also asks Anselm whether she should try to change the future. Anselm tells her that everyone's actions affect the future and it is not immoral for her to use her knowledge of the future so long as she does it to the dictates of God's law to the best of her ability (Outlander, chapter 40)
In mid to late January, as Jamie continues to heal, Claire reveals that she is pregnant (Outlander, chapter 41)
