Murtagh's Outlander Timeline
Murtagh
Significant Moments in Outlander:
1743:
Murtagh meets Jamie when he returns from France as Jamie doesn't trust Dougal (Outlander, chapter 17) and Murtagh has sworn that he will see Jamie safe home. Murtagh plans on taking Jamie back to Lallybroch but Jamie refuses to go there, although he doesn't know what he is going to do. Murtagh takes Jamie to his croft where he fetches Brian Fraser's dirk and then they head off again (Exile, chapter 1)
While travelling they are chased by redcoats who recognise Jamie as an outlaw. Murtagh takes them far away from the British soldiers to the foot of Craigh na Dun where they camp the night. Murtagh keeps watch while Jamie sleeps and is spooked by an owl in a tree above him. The owl flies off and Murtagh follows it, thinking it is a messenger. The owl flies towards the standing stones on Craigh na Dun and as Murtagh approaches a naked man appears from the stones calling for blood. Murtagh thinks the man is an Auld One and he rushes back to Jamie and they leave their campsite to get away from the faery hill (Exile, chapter 1)
The next day Jamie and Murtagh are met by Dougal MacKenzie who says he has come to protect Jamie from Jack Randall who is hunting him. Both Jamie and Murtagh are suspicious of Dougal and Murtagh wants to keep Jamie away from Castle Leoch and the control of Colum. They make plans to run from Dougal once they reach open ground (Exile, chapter 1)
But the party is surprised by British soldiers en route and as they try to escape Jamie is shot at and his horse throws him. He lands on his shoulder and dislocates it. Dougal and his men take Jamie to a small cottage and ask the woman who lives there to shelter them until it is dark (Exile, chapter 1)
Murtagh leaves the cottage to watch for the English soldiers, but finds himself drawn back to Craigh na Dun. He arrives at the standing stones just as Claire comes through. Murtagh thinks that Claire must be the female faery mate of the male he saw come through the stones earlier. He watches to see if the man comes back, but instead sees Claire wander straight into the hands of Jack Randall (Exile, chapter 2) Murtagh rescues Claire from the clutches of Jack Randall and takes her with him back to the group of MacKenzie men he is travelling with (Outlander, chapter 3)
Murtagh, Jamie & Claire are taken to Castle Leoch with the MacKenzies. Not long after arriving there Murtagh sees the man who had come through the stones a few days earlier. He asks who he is and is told his name is Kenneth, he is a man without a clan and has come to swear his oath at the Gathering. Murtagh goes into Cranesmuir and sees Kenneth entering the Procurator Fiscal's house, followed a short time later by Dougal (Exile, chapter 3)
Murtagh accompanies Jamie when he travels with Dougal on the rent collecting expedition. Murtagh is worried about Dougal's plans to marry Jamie to Claire as he thinks Claire is an Auld One, but Jamie won't be dissuaded and tells Murtagh he wants Claire. On the evening of their wedding Murtagh sees Kenneth climb through the window into Claire's room. Thinking this is proof that Claire and Kenneth are in league together he decides to kill Claire to save Jamie. But he can't bring himself to do it as he remembers how much he wanted Jamie's mother Ellen. Murtagh leaves Claire sleeping but swears that if she ever betrays Jamie he will cut her throat (Exile, chapter 5)
Jamie asks Murtagh to look after Claire when he goes hunting with the Duke of Sandringham. When Claire is arrested for witchcraft with Geillis, Murtagh goes to Colum to seek his help but he finds Colum unconscious as he has been poisoned. Murtagh goes to Ned Gowan for help instead and sends Auld Alec to fetch Jamie back (Exile, chapter 9)
When Jamie and Claire escape from the witch trial, Murtagh sees Kenneth follow them and he takes off after Kenneth to make sure Jamie and Claire aren't in danger. He follows Kenneth to Craigh na Dun and arrives just in time to find Kenneth about to kill Jamie while he sleeps in the old hut below the hill. Murtagh challenges Kenneth and after a short fight, stabs him to death (Exile, chapter 9)
Murtagh is sent by Ian to help Claire look for Jamie after he is taken by the Watch (Outlander, chapter 33) Not knowing where to begin to look for Jamie, Murtagh decides they need to make sure that Jamie can find them. He and Claire travel from place to place with Claire doing healing and fortune telling and Murtagh singing and their reputation spreads (Outlander, chapter 34)
After some days a gypsy arrives with a message and takes Claire to a cave, telling Murtagh he must stay behind. She is expecting to find Jamie, but instead finds Dougal. Murtagh finds Claire in the cave with Dougal when he shows up with a pair of loaded pistols just in time to rescue her from Dougal's unwanted advances (Outlander, chapter 34)
Claire, Murtagh and five of Dougal's men, including Rupert, set out to rescue Jamie from Wentworth (Outlander, chapter 34) The second day after arriving at Wentworth and the day before Jamie is to be hanged Claire and Murtagh weasel their way into the prison while Sir Fletcher is at lunch. Murtagh finds out from a guard where the cells for the condemned men are and takes the guard's keys after knocking him out. Claire goes looking for Jamie while Murtagh sneaks back out of the prison (Outlander, chapter 35)
Murtagh finds Claire in MacRannoch's cottage after she has escaped from Wentworth, and MacRannoch unwilling to help. When Murtagh realises that Rupert has stolen some of MacRannoch's cows they are able to convince MacRannoch to help them in return for getting his cows back. After Jamie is rescued from Wentworth and taken to MacRannoch's manor, Jamie asks Murtagh to keep watch on Wentworth and if any soldiers start riding towards Eldridge Manor, Murtagh is to ride back, hide Jamie & Claire in the cellar and ride off with three ponies to draw the soldiers away. If there isn't time for Jamie & Claire to hide, Jamie asks Murtagh kill him and take Claire away. Murtagh gives Claire a dirk before he leaves (Outlander, chapter 36)
Fearing discovery, Jamie, Claire and Murtagh leave Eldridge Manor at midday the following day although Jamie is still badly injured. En route they meet four English soldiers searching for the escaped prisoners. Murtagh tries to bluff his way past them while drawing their attention away form the fact that Jamie is dripping blood onto the snow. Claire hides the blood but one of the soldiers demands that Jamie takes off his hat to reveal his face and Jamie is forced to shoot him. Murtagh shoots one soldier and he and Jamie deal with the third while Claire pursues the fourth. After dealing with the soldiers, Claire, Jamie & Murtagh arrive at the coast and board a ship to France and deliver Jamie to the Abbey of St. Anne de Beaupre (Outlander, chapter 37)
