Jamie Fraser
Significant Moments in Outlander:
1743:
Jamie is reluctantly travelling with Dougal to the MacKenzie lands when he meets Claire for the first time when she resets his dislocated shoulder (Outlander, chapter 3)
Six weeks later Dougal compels Jamie to marry Claire to save her from the clutches of Jack Randall and to keep Jamie from becoming Laird of Clan MacKenzie (Outlander, chapter 13)
Jamie goes to meet Horrocks who may have information that can get him pardoned. He leaves Claire behind in a copse where she leaves to try to get back to Craigh na Dun but is seen to be captured by English soldiers. Jamie rescues her from the clutches of Jack Randall at Fort William (Outlander, chapter 21)
Jamie goes hunting with the Duke of Sandringham in an attempt to gain the Duke's influence to have his outlawry quashed (Outlander, chapter 25) While hunting a boar, a gang of broken men attempt to kill Jamie with an arrow, but it hits his shield instead. The Duke thinks the men are trying to kill him and calls for help just as the huge boar they are hunting rushes out of the bush. Jamie saves the Duke from the boar and kills the boar. In gratitude, the Duke tells Jamie he will take care of the murder charge hanging over him (Exile, chapter 8)
While he is away Claire is taken in Cranesmuir and put on trial as a witch. Auld Alec rides through the night to find Jamie and tell him. Jamie manages to get back to Cranesmuir just in time to prove Claire is not a witch by flinging her jet rosary over her head, as jet is said to burn a witch's skin. With the help of Geillis, Jamie gets Claire away from the mob (Outlander, chapter 25)
Jamie forces Claire to tell the truth about who she really is. In an act of utter selflessness and love Jamie takes Claire to Craigh na Dun so that she can go back home to Frank. After agonising over the decision for half a day Claire lets instinct guide her and chooses to stay with Jamie (Outlander, chapter 25)
Jamie returns to Lallybroch for the first time since being taken away by Jack Randall (Outlander, chapter 26) While trying to fix a broken waterwheel at Lallybroch, six dragoons appear, forcing Jamie to hide under the mill in the freezing water (Outlander, chapter 28) Jamie beats up Ronald McNab to force him to leave his son Rabbie at Lallybroch as Ronald had been beating Rabbie badly (Outlander, chapter 31)
Claire and Jamie plan to leave Lallybroch when they hear there are English soldiers in the district but Jenny goes into labour on the day they were planning to leave and they end up staying (Outlander, chapter 32) A few days after Maggie's birth Ian and Jamie are met by the Watch about midday as they make their way to the mill and Jamie is taken by the Watch. The Watch bind Jamie's arms behind his back and mount him on a horse behind one of the Watch men. While fording a stream Jamie throws himself off the horse into the water and manages to escape (Outlander, chapter 33) While on the run Jamie runs into six dragoons as he comes round a bend, is captured and taken to Wentworth Prison where he is tried and condemned to hang (Outlander, chapter 34)
On December 22nd, one day before Jamie has been sentenced to hang, Claire finds Jamie alone in a dungeon downstairs, in a very bad way. Jamie had tried to strangle Randall when he was untied and succeeded in breaking his nose. In retaliation Randall has pulverised Jamie's right hand with a mallet leaving it a broken pulp and chained him by an ankle to a bolt in the wall. Claire attempts to force the lock on the manacles but can't get them open and Randall reappears. Jamie does his best to attack both Randall and his servant Marley, but is too injured and weak to win. When Randall holds a knife to Claire's throat Jamie offers himself to Randall on the condition that he will let Claire go - an offer that Randall accepts (Outlander, chapter 35)
Randall abuses Jamie physically and mentally to the extent that Jamie wishes he were dead. Later that night MacRannoch's men rescue Jamie when they go to retrieve their cattle from the dungeons where they have been driven by Rupert. They take a naked, unconscious Jamie back to Eldridge Manor. Jamie has broken bones, burns, weals from a whip and cane, and many bruises. When he regains consciousness Claire resets his badly smashed hand and Jamie refuses laudanum as he does not want to be unconscious should the soldiers come looking for him. MacRannoch tells Jamie that Jack Randall was trampled to death by the cattle. Jamie gets MacRannoch to help him cut out the mark that Randall branded him with on his chest (Outlander, chapter 36)
Fearing discovery, Jamie, Claire and Murtagh leave Eldridge Manor at midday the following day, with Jamie tied to his horse as he is still badly injured. En route they meet four English soldiers searching for the escaped prisoners. While Murtagh tries to bluff his way past them, Jamie is dripping blood onto the snow. Claire hides the blood but one of the soldiers demands that Jamie takes off his hat to reveal his face and Jamie is forced to shoot him. Jamie and Murtagh deal with two of the remaining soldiers and Jamie throws his pistol to Claire and tells her to go after the fourth soldier who has fled. After dealing with the soldiers they arrive at the coast and board a ship to France. Jamie is seriously unwell with seasickness compounded by his broken ribs but he makes it to France and Claire and Murtagh take him to the Abbey of St Anne de Beaupre (Outlander, chapter 37)
1744:
Jamie has his first nightmare induced by the scent of lavender. While his physical wounds slowly heal his psychological wounds continue to fester. In despair Jamie asks Claire to go back to Frank as he is so sickened with himself that he cannot bear to touch her. (Outlander, chapter 39)
Jamie's smashed right hand becomes infected and he develops a very high fever and wants to die. He is so ill that Abbot Alexander administers the Sacrament of Extreme Unction to him. With Jamie close to death, Claire performs a desperate form of exorcism on him, using opium, psychology and theatre. In his drugged state Jamie believes he is being abused again by Jack Randall but this time he is able to fight back. Claire's incredible gamble pays off and Jamie is brought back from the brink of physical and psychological defeat (Outlander, chapter 39)
In mid to late January, as Jamie continues to heal, Claire reveals that she is pregnant (Outlander, chapter 41)
