Arabella - the ship which brings Mary Hawkins to France (DIA, chapter 8)
Arianna - one of Jared Fraser's ships. The Arianna is a 3-masted ship, about 60 feet long with a wide bow (DIA, chapter 6)
Artemis - the name of the ship that Jamie and Claire take in pursuit of Ian when he is kidnapped from the seal's island. The Artemis is a mid-sized sloop (V, chapter 40) She is 80 feet long and 25 feet wide. The Artemis has two private cabins, each with two built-in beds about five and a half feet long (V, chapter 41) She has four huge guns (V, chapter 42) Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt. Her Roman equivalent is Diana.
Bark - a bark, or barque, is a sailing ship with three or more masts. The foremasts are rigged square which means the sails sit perpendicular to the keel. The after-mast is rigged fore-and-aft which means the sails run parallel to the keel. Claire sees barks in the harbour at Le Havre (DIA, chapter 6)
Brigantine - a brigantine is a sailing ship with two masts. Claire sees brigantines in the harbour at Le Havre (DIA, chapter 6)
Bruja - the name of the ship that took Young Ian from the seal's island. It is a three-masted wide beamed blue ship with a broad black band painted all around it, with twelve gunports set in the band, and with a scowling figurehead at the front (V, chapter 39) Bruja is the Spanish word for witch.
Caravel - the type of small, manoeuverable Portuguese sailing ship used by Christopher Columbus. When Claire first sights land in the Caribbean after crossing the Atlantic on the Porpoise she feels some of the relief and joy that Columbus would have felt in his caravel (V, chapter 49)
Cristabel - the ship that Claire, Jamie and Murtagh sailed on to France after rescuing Jamie from Wentworth Prison (Outlander, chapter 37)
Dory - a dory is a small lightweight boat of about 5-7 metres long with high sides, a flat bottom and sharp bows. Dories are often use for fishing. Claire sees dories in the harbour at Le Havre (DIA, chapter 6)
Frigate - a warship. Charles Stuart crossed the Channel to Scotland with two small frigates (DIA, chapter 35)
Galley - a ship primarily propelled by many sets of oars. Claire sees galleys in the harbour at Le Havre (DIA, chapter 6)
Ketch - When Claire spies the smuggling ship approaching the shore at Arbroath she describes it as a two-masted ketch (V, chapter 30) A ketch has a larger forward mast and a smaller after mast
Lugger - a small sailing ship often used as a fishing boat. A lugger has lugsails which are four-sided sails which are hoisted on a yard. The smuggling boat that Jamie planned to meet at Mullin's Cove was a lugger (V, chapter 27)
Man-o-war - a battleship powered by sails and armed with cannons
Mayflower - when Joe's son Lenny complains that he doesn't know where his ancestors came from, Joe tells him it wasn't the Mayflower (V, chapter 20)
Packet boat - after Ian is kidnapped from the seal's island, Jamie and Claire cross over to France on a packet boat (V, chapter 40) Packet boats were small boats of varying types which ran to regularly scheduled services and carried mail, freight and passengers
Patagonia - the ship owned by the Comte St Germain which has smallpox aboard and is consequently burnt (DIA, chapter 6)
Porpoise - the ship which stops the Artemis after being decimated by sickness and which 'kidnaps' Claire when they are desperately in need of a physician. The Porpoise is a three-masted man-o-war with seventy-four guns. She has a puffed-lipped fish as a figurehead (V, chapter 46)
Portia - one of Jared Fraser's ships and the ship that took Claire, Jamie and Fergus back to Scotland after their time in France (DIA, chapter 30)
Queen Elizabeth - Claire notes that the anchor chain on board the Porpoise looks strong enough to moor the Queen Elizabeth (V, chapter 46) Claire is referring to RMS Queen Elizabeth, an ocean liner belonging to the Cunard line which was launched in 1938 and served as a troop ship during WWII
Serafina - the ship Yi Tien Cho stows away on to escape China (V, chapter 45)
Scalamandre - the ship transporting the port that the Comte St Germain and Charles Stuart are importing to France, and that Jamie and Murtagh stop by faking Murtagh having smallpox (DIA, chapter 27)
Sloop - a sailing boat with a single mast. Lord John tells his men there is room to hide a sloop behind some of the islands off the coast at Ardsmuir (V, chapter 9)
Triton - Elias Pound first went to sea aboard the Triton, a ship his uncle commanded (V, chapter 46)
