The Blessed Sacrament is considered to be the blood and body of Christ by Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches. For every hour of every day there is a person watching over the Blessed Sacrament and the monks take it in turns to watch. The basis for the ritual is that when Jesus was awaiting trial and crucifixion in the Garden of Gethsemane his disciples all fell asleep instead of being with him. The ritual of Perpetual Adoration aims to atone for that.
