Bone saw - used for amputations
Brass pin - Monsieur Forez hammers a brass pin into the nerve plexus on the thigh of a man with a broken leg. The pin causes the nerves to be numbed below the pin allowing the leg to be reset with less pain than would otherwise be the case (DIA, chapter 14)
Catgut sutures - When Claire first travels to the 18th century she makes her own catgut sutures so that she can be sure of the sterility of her materials (DIA, chapter 36)
Chisels - Found in Davie Beaton's chest at Castle Leoch (Outlander, chapter 7)
Knives - Found in Davie Beaton's chest at Castle Leoch (Outlander, chapter 7)
Lancet - a scalpel used for cutting and bloodletting
Long nosed forceps - used to grip and hold things such as splinters
Roll of paper or parchment - rolled into a tube and used as a stethoscope. Claire remarks that it is 'amazingly effective' (DIA, chapter 39) Claire uses thick sheets of vellum paper while on board the Artemis (V, chapter 43) Vellum paper is fine parchment made from calf skin
Saws - Found in Davie Beaton's chest at Castle Leoch (Outlander, chapter 7)
Scissors - used for cutting bandages. When Claire is at L'Hopital des Anges a knifemaker gives her a pair of scissors which have gilt handles in the shape of stork's heads with the bills forming the silver blades of the scissors (DIA, chapter 21)
Suture needles - Claire makes her own suture needles when she first goes to the 18th century as she is appalled by the needles which were normally used then. She makes them from the finest embroidery needles she can find which she bends into a half-moon curve by heating them over the flame of an alcohol lamp (DIA, chapter 36)
Urinoscopy cup - a small glass cup for collecting urine for the purpose of diagnosis. Claire acquires some of these from L'Hopital des Anges and has them in her medical kit at the Battle of Prestonpans (DIA, chapter 36)
