A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step - Claire recalls seeing this on a poster in a shop window and contemplates how true it is as she begins her journey to find Jamie after arriving back through the stones (V, chapter 24) This is a Chinese proverb from philosopher Lao Tzu
Absence makes the heart grow fonder - Claire says this to Jamie when he returns home after being away for two days (DIA, chapter 33)
Bairns are certain joy, but nay sma' care - Claire quotes this proverb to herself when she hears Jenny having to get up in the middle of the night to tend to baby Maggie and toddler Jamie (DIA, chapter 33) Claire is actually reversing the words of the proverb and changing them slightly. The proverb is: "Bairns are certain care but nae sure joy"
Early to bed and early to rise - Claire quotes this to the exciseman who surprises her on the stairs of Madame Jeanne's brothel when he asks her why she's up and about so early. The full proverb is 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise'. It was first recorded by Benjamin Franklin in 1735 in his Poor Richard's Almanac and may well have originated from him.
In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king - Claire thinks of this proverb when she and Jamie meet up with the Highland Army which appears to be a state of disarray. As no-one seems to know what they're doing, Claire decides she may as well start making a few suggestions herself (DIA, chapter 36) This adage is attributed to Erasmus, a Dutch theologian who published a collection of Latin proverbs and adages called Adagia
Marry in haste, repent at leisure - Lord Lovat says this to his son Simon when Simon is urging him to join Charles Stuart's rebellion and he is refusing to commit. Lord Lovat says it is even more true when choosing a laird than a lass as a woman can be got rid of (DIA, chapter 41)
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions - Claire refers to this proverb when she and Jamie are forced into celibacy aboard the Artemis after Jamie forbids Fergus and Marsali from sharing a bed util they are legally wed by a priest, thus forcing Jamie to share a cabin with Fergus, and Claire to share one with Marsali (V, chapter 44)
