Musical Instruments
Bagpipes - that ubiquitous Scottish instrument. There are various types of bagpipes. Refer below to Great Northern Pipes, Irish Pipes and Small Pipes.
Cellos - John Simpson junior, who is deaf, is able to dance at a ball at the Palace of Holyroodhouse by feeling the vibrations in the floor from the cellos resting on it (DIA, chapter 37)
Drums - Bamboo drums were being beaten in Peking on the night of the Lantern Festival when Yi Tien Cho fled the city (V, chapter 45)
Fiddle - the landlord in the inn where Jamie and Claire stay when they are married plays the fiddle (Outlander, chapter 16), one of the gypsies Claire and Murtagh meet while searching for Jamie plays the fiddle (Outlander, chapter 34) Brodie Cooper, a seaman onboard the Artemis, plays the fiddle (V, chapter 45)
Flutes - Gwyllyn the bard plays three wooden flutes of varying sizes at Castle Leoch (Outlander, chapter 8) one of the Lallybroch tenants plays a wooden flute at the potato feast (DIA, chapter 32)
Great Northern pipes - played by the piper Labhriunn MacIan before the Battle of Falkirk Muir (DIA, chapter 43) The great northern pipes are what we traditionally think of when we think of bagpipes, the large pipes played in Scottish pipe bands all over the world today
Harp - Gwyllyn the bard plays a harp at Castle Leoch (Outlander, chapter 8)
Harpischord - played at the Rohan's house (DIA, chapter 11) Mother Hildegarde has a large harpsichord made of walnut and decorated along the sounding board with small hand-painted flowers sprouting from a twisting vine (DIA, chapter 15) there is a harpsichord at the Palace of Holyroodhouse (DIA, chapter 37)
Irish pipes - small bagpipes used indoors for making music (DIA, chapter 43)
Small pipes - a small version of bagpipes. A young piper played the small pipes at Colum's Hall (Outlander, chapter 6) Small pipes may refer to Scottish lowland or parlour pipes, or Irish pipes
Spinet - the Duke of Sandringham has a spinet in his home, Bellhurst Manor (DIA, chapter 44). A spinet is a small harpsichord
Tambourine - a young gypsy girl in the band of gypsies that Claire and Murtagh meet while searching for Jamie plays the tambourine (Outlander, chapter 34)
