brooches & Badges
Cairngorm brooch - Geneva Dunsany is wearing a cairngorm brooch on the day she blackmails Jamie in the field (V, chapter 14) Cairngorm is a type of smoky quartz crystal from the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland and is usually a yellow-brown colour
Circular silver brooch - Jamie's plaid is fastened with a circular silver brooch on his wedding to Claire (Outlander, chapter 14) This may be the same as the silver ring brooch mentioned below
Crescent moon brooch - Jenny's grandmother Fraser owned a silver crescent moon brooch with a single diamond shining above the tip (Outlander, chapter 31)
Large jewelled brooch - both Colum and Dougal secure their plaid with a large jewelled brooch for Colum's Hall session (Outlander, chapter 6)
Leaping stag brooch - when Claire first meets MacRannoch he is wearing a large bear cloak fastened with a silver-gilt brooch in the shape of two leaping stags with their backs arched and heads meeting to form a circle (Outlander, chapter 35)
MID oakleaf cluster - Jerry MacKenzie is posthumously awarded an MID oakleaf cluster for his gallant service (Leaf) MID stands for 'Mentioned in Dispatches' and it means that a superior officer has mentioned the soldier's gallant actions in an official report. An oakleaf cluster is actually an American military medal, not a British one, although the British war medals do have an oakleaf on the clasp
Order of St Andrew - when Charles Stuart arrives to visit the wounded after the Battle of Prestonpans, Claire notes that "the order of St Andrew glittered brilliantly upon his breast" (DIA, chapter 36) The badge that Claire is referring would not have been the Order of St Andrew which is a Russian order of chivalry and highly unlikely to have been awarded to an Italian/Scottish prince in exile. Charles Stuart was probably wearing the Scottish Order of the Thistle which is the highest honour in Scotland. The patron saint of the Order of the Thistle is St Andrew and he appears on the badge. Both Charles Stuart and his father James continued to appoint Knights of the Thistle while they were exiled from Scotland. The badge worn by Knights of the Thistle is a silver saltire with a gold medallion at the centre contained in an enamelled representation of the thistle.
Running-stag brooch - Frank sees this on the plaid of the ghost outside Claire's window (Outlander, chapter 1) Jamie is given this brooch by Jenny when he is in France and he wears it on the trip to the Royal stables in Argentan. It is described as "a beautiful thing ... made in the shape of two running stags, bodies bent so that they joined in a circle, heads and tails touching" (DIA, chapter 22)
Silver ring brooch - Claire helps Jamie fasten his plaid with a silver ring brooch when they are in Paris. (DIA, chapter 7)
This may be the same brooch as the circular silver brooch mentioned above
