Fergus Fraser
Significant Moments in Dragonfly in Amber:
1744:
Fergus meets Jamie when Jamie stumbles into the brothel while fleeing some sailors who are trying to kill him. Jamie employs Fergus as a pickpocket to steal letters. The terms of his employment are that Jamie will provide him with clothes, lodging and wages. If Fergus is caught Jamie will try and buy him off and if that is impossible and Fergus loses a hand or an ear then Jamie will maintain him for the rest of his life. If Fergus is hanged, Jamie will have masses said for his soul for a year (DIA, chapter 12)
In May there is an explosion at the Royal Armory resulting in many patients arriving at the L'Hopital. Claire and Mary Hawkins work late tending to the patients. Murtagh and Fergus are waiting to accompany them home and as there are no coaches to be had they decide to take a shortcut through an alleyway. Once past the alley in another street they are attacked without warning by richly-dressed men in masks. Fergus manages to get away and returns with Jamie but not before Mary Hawkins has been raped (DIA, chapter 18)
Jamie, Claire and Fergus accompany the Duke of Sandringham to the Royal stables in Argentan as the Duke wishes Jamie to advise him on the purchase of some broodmares. This is the first time Fergus has ever been out of the city and he is in constant trouble from the moment they arrive doing things such as taunting the stable boys by throwing manure at them. Fergus jumps on the back of a young Percheron colt which is not fully broken to saddle. The grooms are herding the horse towards a paddock to contain it when one of the stable boys whom Fergus had previously thrown manure at takes his revenge and drops a load of hay on the horse as it passes beneath the loft where he is hidden. The horse takes off in a fright straight towards the picnicking nobles and starts bucking to try and dislodge Fergus. Jamie leaps from a tree and knocks Fergus off the horse's back while the horse takes off. Fergus declares it was fun and asks if he can do it again (DIA, chapter 22)
Jamie receives a note from his warehouse foreman who has got into a spot of bother at a brothel and asks Jamie to come and assist him. Jamie decides to take Fergus with him to carry messages (DIA, chapter 24) While Jamie sorts out the foreman's financial problems, Fergus goes up stairs to visit the prostitutes and is in the room when Jack Randall arrives looking for a whore. Randall sees Fergus and chooses him. Madame Elise tells him to go and she will split the profits and as Fergus has done this before, he goes with Randall. However, Randall is rough and he burns Fergus with his ring causing Fergus to cry out in pain. Jamie comes running and discovers them (DIA, chapter 28) Jamie throws Randall down the stairs and challenges him to a duel (DIA, chapter 24)
Fergus goes to Fontainebleu with Claire after her miscarriage (DIA, chapter 26) When an altercation with a stable boy results in Fergus's breeches being torn, Claire sees the newly healed burn left by Randall's ring. Claire questions Fergus who explains what happened that day, and that he feels that it is all his fault that Jamie fought Randall and has now gone (DIA, chapter 28)
Fergus leaves France and travels to Scotland and Lallybroch with Jamie and Claire (DIA, chapter 30) Fergus takes on the position of stable-lad which he shares with Rabbie MacNab, and they become close friends (DIA, chapter 33)
1745:
Jamie takes Fergus with him when he marches with the men of Lallybroch to join Charles Stuart (DIA, chapter 35) When they meet up with the Highland Army at Tranent, Jamie orders Fergus to stay with Claire which he dutifully but reluctantly does as he is itching to be in the thick of the action with Jamie. He staves off boredom by carrying messages and collecting rumours (DIA, chapter 36)
When a local man called Richard Anderson arrives with information about a safe route through the swamp lying between the Scottish and English armies, Fergus offers to take him to Jamie who will be able to introduce the man to Lord George Murray, the commander in chief. Fergus arms himself with a kitchen knife before he leaves and Claire forgets to tell him to return to her (DIA, chapter 36)
Fergus survives the Battle of Prestonpans and thinks that he killed a soldier with his knife. He rides back to the village after the battle on top of a cannon which the MacGillivrays have captured from the English (DIA, chapter 36)
When Jamie, Claire and Murtagh go to Lord Lovat's lands, Jamie orders Fergus to stay with the Lallybroch men and make his way back to Lallybroch with them under the command of Ross the smith (DIA, chapter 40) The men are all caught deserting and are thrown into the Tolbooth under threat of death, but Fergus is not imprisoned with them because he is a French citizen. Fergus survives by pickpocketing until Jamie and Claire return (DIA, chapter 41-42)
1746:
While Jamie, Dougal and Young Simon ride to Stirling Castle to plead with Charles Stuart to release the Lallybroch men, Claire stays in Edinburgh and visits them daily with Fergus (DIA, chapter 42)
After Jamie kills Dougal, he gives the Deed of Sasine to Fergus and tells him to take Donas and ride for Lallybroch and deliver the Deed safely to Jenny and Ian (DIA, chapter 46)
