battles
Battle of Flodden Field - Claire notes that inside The World's End tavern is the remnant of a wall built by the city fathers of Edinburgh after the disastrous Battle of Flodden Field in 1513 (V, chapter 25) The Battle of Flodden Field was fought on 9 September 1513. England was at war with France and the French persuaded the Scots to renew their alliance and aid the French by invading England. Lead by King James IV, the Scots did so and engaged in battle with the English on Flodden Field. Despite having superior numbers the Scots were soundly beaten and King James IV died in battle, becoming the last British monarch to die on the battlefield.
Battle of the Bulge - when Claire sees Jamie approaching at the witch trial she says she feels the same way General McAuliffe must have felt seeing Patton's army arrive during the Battle of the Bulge (Outlander, chapter 25)
Caen - This refers to the Battle for Caen in Normandy, France, from June-August 1944 in WWII. Claire mentions she saw a lot of Gordons in the field hospital at Amiens after Caen (Outlander, chapter 1)
Falkirk - Roger mentions the Battle of Falkirk when discussing the Jacobite Rising with Brianna as an example of a battle that the Scots shouldn't have won by rights (DIA, chapter 2) Roger is referring to the Battle of Falkirk Muir in 1746 and not the better known Battle of Falkirk in 1298 where William Wallace was defeated by the English
Gaeta - Claire notes that Charles Stuart's first experience of battle was at Gaeta (DIA, chapter 36) This refers to the Siege of Gaeta in Italy in 1734 which was part of the War of Polish Succession where royal houses from across Europe battled each other for territory
Glencoe Massacre - Jamie references the Glencoe Massacre when he tells Claire that Colum wouldn't leave the castle unguarded during the Gathering (Outlander, chapter 10)
Prestonpans - one of the major battles of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. Claire tells Roger that the Highlanders won with barely two thousand men against an English army of eight thousand (DIA, chapter 2) However, in reality the size of the two armies was evenly matched with approx. 2500 English troops facing the Jacobites
Sherriffmuir - a battle fought during the first Jacobite Rising in 1715. The outcome of the battle was inconclusive but halted the Jacobite advance. Jamie notes that James Stuart's forces were defeated at Sherriffmuir before James even arrived at the battlefield (DIA, chapter 7)
St. Simone - when MacRannoch offers Jamie a piece of leather to bite on while Claire sets his broken hand he tells him that he used it himself at St. Simone when he had a musket ball dug out of his leg. I don't know if this is an actual battle or a made-up one (Outlander, chapter 36)
Stirling Castle - Claire passes onto Jamie the information that the siege of Stirling Castle is getting nowhere (DIA, chapter 39) Charles Stuart's Jacobite forces attempted to take Stirling Castle from the English by siege from 2nd January - 1st February 1746, but were not successful
