Alcohol poisoning - four men onboard the Porpoise die from stealing and drinking Claire's pure alcohol, and two become comatose and will be permanently brain-damaged if they survive (V, chapter 47)

Body lice - Claire notes that body lice were endemic amongst the Lallybroch men who fought with Charles Stuart (DIA, chapter 36) Body lice are bigger than head lice and public lice but like those lice they feed on human blood and lay their eggs on skin and clothing. They are common in overcrowded conditions where people cannot wash their bodies or clothes. Body lice cause severe itching

Catarrh - many people suffered from catarrh when Charles Stuart and his army were in Edinburgh (DIA, chapter 38) Catarrh is a build-up of mucus or phlegm, usually in the nose, throat, ears or chest. It is a symptom commonly associated with colds and flu, but can also be caused by hayfever and allergies
Chillblains - some of the Lallybroch men suffered from chillblains when imprisoned in the Tolbooth (DIA, chapter 42) Chillblains are small, itchy painful lumps that are caused by cold temperatures damaging tissue
Cholecystitis - when Duncan Innes suffers abdominal pain aboard the Artemis, Claire wonders what she will do if it turns out to be acute cholecystitis (V, chapter 41) Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder usually caused by a gallstone blockage
Congestive heart failure - Alex Randall has congestive heart failure (DIA, chapter 39) Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump as well as it should. Blood returns to the heart faster than it can be pumped out and then backs up, or gets congested. It is a serious condition
