Murtagh's Dragonfly in Amber Timeline
Murtagh
Significant Moments in Dragonfly in Amber:
1744:
Murtagh goes to Paris with Claire and Jamie (DIA, chapter 7) He goes back to Scotland for two weeks to bring large quantities of good Scotch whisky back to Paris (DIA, chapter 9)
In May there is an explosion at the Royal Armory resulting in many patients arriving at the L'Hopital. Claire and Mary Hawkins work late tending to the patients. Murtagh and Fergus are waiting to accompany them home and as there are no coaches to be had they decide to take a shortcut through an alleyway. Once past the alley in another street they are attacked without warning by richly-dressed men in masks. Murtagh is hit from behind, knocked out and wrapped in a sailcloth. The men attempt to force themselves on Claire and Mary. When they recognise Claire they are scared of 'La Dame Blanche' and run off but not before Mary has been raped. Fergus arrives with Jamie who cuts Murtagh out of his sailcloth bag (DIA, chapter 18)
Ashamed at his failure to protect Mary and Claire, and sickened at the result, Murtagh asks Jamie to take his life so he no longer has to live with the shame. Jamie refuses but asks Murtagh to swear him an oath that he will hunt down the men who attacked Claire and Mary and take vengeance on them. Murtagh agrees (DIA, chapter 19)
Jamie concocts a plan to have the cargo of the ship carrying the port being imported by the Comte St Germain and Charles Stuart destroyed. Murtagh will take passage on the ship and Jamie will board the ship at Orvieto when it puts in for water. Once at sea Murtagh will fake the symptoms of smallpox by taking herbal concoctions prepared by Claire. The Captain will not be willing to take his ship into Le Havre where it would be destroyed and hopefully will agree to sell the cargo to Jamie instead (DIA, chapter 23) Murtagh travels to Orvieto and sends details of the shipping arrangments to Jamie. Jamie arrives in Orvieto and with a slight tinkering to the plan, with Jamie playing the smallpox victim and Murtagh the merchant, they manage to fake smallpox and the captain of the ship sells the port to Murtagh who sells it to a broker in Bilbao. Murtagh then travels back to Paris to pay back Charles Stuart's loan (DIA, chapter 28)
1745:
Murtagh accompanies Jamie and the Lallybroch men as they march to join Charles Stuart. When Jamie is attacked by John Grey while they are camping in the woods, he asks Murtagh to punish him for his carelessness by flogging him with a leather strip. Murtagh amusingly complies (DIA, chapter 36)
Murtagh accompanies Jamie and Claire to Beauly to see Lord Lovat (DIA, chapter 40) When Jamie and Claire return to Lallybroch after leaving Beauly, Murtagh goes onto Edinburgh with Young Simon to see how matters stand with the Highland army. Murtagh arrives in Edinburgh to find that all Jamie's men are locked up in the Tolbooth under sentence of death after being discovered deserting. He races to Lallybroch to tell Jamie (DIA, chapter 41-42)
1746:
Murtagh accompanies Jamie and his men to rescue Claire when she is taken to the Duke of Sandringham's home after the Battle of Falkirk Muir. While Jamie frees Claire, Murtagh fulfils the oath that Jamie made him swear after Mary and Claire were attacked in Paris - that he would hunt down the men who attacked them and take vengeance on them. He kills the Duke of Sandringham and takes his head wrapped in a cloth. Murtagh joins Jamie and his men as they leave the Sandringham estate. After riding through the night they arrive at Hugh's impoverished home and Jamie takes Hugh's body to his widow. Just as Jamie is about to leave, Murtagh steps into the house with Mary Hawkins. Murtagh bows to Claire and tells her he has brought her her vengeance. He then bows his head to Mary and Mrs Munro and says he has brought them justice for the wrong done to them. Mrs Munro opens Murtagh's saddlebag and draws out the Duke of Sandringham's head (DIA, chapter 44)
After Jamie kills Dougal he asks Murtagh to sign his name as a witness to the Deed of Sasine he has drawn up giving ownership of Lallybroch to Young Jamie and Murtagh does so without hesitation. Jamie then asks Murtagh to gather his men and wait until he returns from seeing Claire to safety (DIA, chapter 46)
Murtagh dies on Culloden Moor during the Battle of Culloden (V, chapter 1)
