Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser
Murtagh
Full name: Murtagh FitzGibbons Fraser
Wife: None
Children: None
Occupation: Jamie's right hand man
Physical Characteristics: short, lean but wiry, with pock-marked skin, ferret-faced with a low brow and narrow jaw (Outlander, chapter 3) Murtagh has a beautiful clear tenor voice when he sings (Outlander, chapter 18) Claire thinks Murtagh strongly resembles one of the gargoyles on Notre Dame (DIA, chapter 19)
Murtagh is Jamie's godfather and bodyguard. He is taciturn and loyal to his bone. In Outlander Jamie says Murtagh is a second cousin of his father's, but this isn't mentioned in Cross Stitch (Outlander only, chapter 17) In a later discussion between Jamie and Jenny, Murtagh is described as Brian Fraser's second cousin's nephew (Outlander, chapter 31) Jamie tells Claire that Murtagh doesn't look much on a horse, but he is a braw rider and fast as chain lightning (DIA, chapter 40) Murtagh is related to Lord Lovat's third wife, Primrose Campbell, who was tricked into marrying Lovat. Consequently Murtagh is no friend of the Old Fox (DIA, chapter 40)
Significant Moments:
1715: During the Great Gathering held after Jacob MacKenzie's death, Murtagh kills a wounded boar single-handed with a dagger and is given the boar's tushes. He has these made into a pair of bracelets which he gives to Ellen MacKenzie (Outlander, chapter 36)
1721: A week after Jamie is born Murtagh swears an oath to Jamie's mother Ellen that when Jamie is a man he will follow him always to do his bidding and guard his back (DIA, chapter 19)
1740: After Jamie is rescued from Fort William after his flogging, Murtagh takes him to France and leaves him with the mercenary company that Ian Murray is serving with. Murtagh tells Jamie to stay with Ian and not to come back to Scotland (Virgins)
